The Studio

Articles

The September 2009 issue of The Photographer magazine, Saraya was the featured photographer.

Of course, one of the rules of business becomes even more fundamental when times are very tough: focus on the customer. Saraya certainly appears to have this properly sussed. Walk in, and it’s a different kind of feel from the usual high-street portrait outfit. Saraya’s operation runs from converted warehouse premises in what can be loosely called the ‘cultural’ quarter of High Barnet, North London. To be honest, I didn’t realise such a place existed, but the fact is it’s leafy, and affluent – Saraya confidently comments that footballers of some level live nearby. It’s no mistake – having a portrait taken in a professional environment is a luxury commodity, and requires an above-average economic area to support it. Therefore, rather than just popping down to the local shops, her clients feel like it’s a bit of an occasion going to a ‘big’ studio. There are advantages to each approach, however there’s nothing wrong with a client having to go a little out of their way as long as the first impression is good when they get there.
